SDCC 2018: TV Show Panels

SDCC is filled with so many things to do, but the most anticipated aspect of the event is the panels. Casts and crew from our favorite shows come to show the fans what they can expect from the next season and start that hype train up with trailers. There were so many panels at SDCC I couldn't attend all of them (long-lines), but I was able to participate in and enjoy a few. Here are some of the panels I was able to see.

Allie Goertz (MAD Magazine/Everything’s Coming Up Simpson podcast) moderated the panel discussion with creator Matt Groening, showrunner Josh Weinstein and cast Eric Andre, Nat Faxon, John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, and David Herman along with Claudia Katz from Rough Draft animation studio.

From the mind of Matt Groening, comes the 10-episode adult animated comedy-fantasy series, Disenchantment. Viewers will be whisked away to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.

The series features the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson (“Bean”), Eric Andre (“Luci”), and Nat Faxon (“Elfo”)  along with John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery

USA Network opened the doors of America’s first “Purge City” store, an immersive experience in the heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp District, to the public. Today Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse Productions and producer of “The Purge” film franchise and the all-new series, and James DeMonaco, franchise creator and executive producer of “The Purge” films and THE PURGE series, stopped by the one-stop shop “Purge City” to stock up on Purge night essentials and see the activation brought to life.

Moderated by Ryan Turek, VP of Feature Film Development at Blumhouse Productions and co-host of Shock Waves Podcast, Blum and DeMonaco were joined on-stage by premiere episode director Anthony Hemingway (“Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.”); “The First Purge” star Lex Scott Davis (“SuperFly”); film franchise, THE PURGE series producer Brad Fuller (“A Quiet Place,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”), series showrunner Tom Kelly, and series stars Gabriel Chavarria, Amanda Warren, and Fiona Dourif.

KRYPTON brought the stars and creatives together to discuss how its powerful Season 1 finale re-wrote the history of Superman. Moderator Damian Holbrook (TV Guide Magazine) was joined on stage by series regulars Cameron Cuffe, Wallis Day, Ann Ogbomo, Shaun Sipos, executive producer and showrunner Cameron Welsh and DC’s Dan Evans. After a lively conversation about all of the surprises and easter eggs from Season 1, the audience was reminded of the cliffhanger where the city of Kandor and its many lives were left at stake. The panelists teased that in Season 2 viewers will see planets beyond Krypton inhabitants, Doomsday unleashed and Brainiac’s origin story. Attendees also learned that a beloved DC character will be joining the story and no one is safe.  To wrap it up, a blooper reel from season one was shared of all the serious moments that were not so serious behind-the-scenes. KRYPTON is set to return to SYFY in 2019.

SYFY presented their new drama,
DEADLY CLASS, based on the best-selling 2014 Image Comics graphic novel of the same name. The panel featured comic co-creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner Rick Remender, executive producers and co-showrunners Miles Orion Feldsott and Mick Betancourt, artist and comic co-creator Wes Craig, and cast members Benjamin Wadsworth (“Teen Wolf”), Lana Condor (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Alita: Battle Angel”), Benedict Wong (“Doctor Strange,” “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams”), María Gabriela De Faría (“Yo Soy Franky,” “Sitiados”) and Luke Tennie (“Shock and Awe”). Moderated by Dominic Patten (Deadline), the panelists delved into the popularity of the graphic novels, how the adaptation came to life, and what viewers can expect from this unique coming of age story in an alt-universe setting. Kicking off with a special video message from the Russo Brothers, the panel also featured a 13-minute sneak peek of the pilot and an all-new trailer.

Magic is back…THE MAGICIANS brought the stars and executive producers together today to discuss the epic Season 3 finale that completely changed the fate of our magicians and left fans eager for more. Moderator and series guest star Felicia Day was joined on stage by series regulars Jason Ralph (Quentin Coldwater aka “Brian”), Stella Maeve (Julia Wicker aka “Kim”), Olivia Taylor Dudley (Alice Quinn…still just “Alice”), Hale Appleman (Eliot Waugh aka “The Monster”) and Summer Bishil (Margo Hanson aka “Janet”) alongside executive producers and co-creators Sera Gamble and John McNamara. After discussing how they all plan to up the ante in season four, the audience got a clever sneak peek at the “new” mystery characters and teased how this group dynamic will shift the future of the series.

SYFY and IDW Entertainment announced a Season 4 pickup of the cult hit WYNONNA EARP. The announcement was made during the show’s panel, which was joined by stars Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon, Shamier Anderson, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Katherine Barrell, Varun Saranga, Chantel Riley alongside showrunner and creator Emily Andras and comic book creator Beau Smith. Moderated by Den of Geek’s Kayti Burt, the panelists revealed behind-the-scenes antics, their favorite upcoming episodes from S3 and teased the first-ever Purgatory Christmas episode. Last but not least, fans were surprised with the special announcement of the WYNONNA EARP Funko deal. WYNONNA EARP Season 3 is currently airing Fridays at 9/8c on SYFY; the fourth season is slated to premiere on SYFY in 2019. Get your whiskey and doughnuts ready… and maybe, more whiskey.
