Comic Book Review: Batgirl and the Birds of Prey Rebirth #8

There are dozens of groups and teams in the DC Universe, and one of my favorite teams is the Birds of Prey. The Birds of Prey was a group created by The Oracle aka Batgirl aka Barbra Gordan after she was crippled by The Joker. Barbara partnered up with Black Canary and together fought crime after some time the duo started adding new members to the ranks including Huntress, Catwoman, Lady Blackhawk, Big Barda, Jade Canary, Gypsy, Hawkgirl, Judomaster, Manhunter, Misfit, Dove, Starling, Katana, Poison Ivy, Strix, and Condor. The Birds had a magnificent run and established themselves well in the DC universe, so I was so happy to see them get their own Rebirth title. Batgirl and the Birds of Prey are now a trio consisting of first birds of prey members Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress.

The issue opens with Nightwing on his motorcycle being helped by Batgirl. Nightwing is searching for the villain Gemini. Batgirl tracks her location into and alley and Nightwing's shocked to fight Batman in the alley waiting for him. Nightwing is attacked and stabbed by the Batman imposter and left bloody, but just before Gemini could deliver the fatal blow the Birds of Prey appear. Gemini is a metahuman and thanks to a mysterious person named Blackbird she's proving to be a difficult challenge for the heroes. The heroes struggle to gain an advantage, and finally Black Canary uses her scream to cause an explosion that causes Gemini to flee. After the fight, Nightwing and the Birds head to their headquarters and treat Nightwing's wounds.

Nightwing catches up with his former partners and lovers Batgirl and Huntress. Nightwing is concerned with their being another Oracle that isn't Barbra. Batgirl insists that everything is alright and jokes Dick is just jealous she has a fan. Meanwhile, Huntress and Canary are trying to track down Gemini and Blackbird with the help of Oracle. Oracle knows the location of a Meta fight club, and Canary decides to investigate the site alone since she's the only metahuman on the team. While this is going on, we finally see the infamous Blackbird. Gemini injured crawls back to Blackbird. Blackbird congratulated Gemini on her mission and tell her she will ascend to the next level. Blackbird transforms Gemini into a human. Human Gemini lays on the floor helpless. Canary arrives at the metahuman fight club walks over to the boss and asks to sign up. Canary will be fighting up next.

I really enjoyed this issue. I'm a huge fan of the birds of prey and was glad to see Nightwing join them on an adventure. It was fun to see the dynamic between Nightwing Batgirl and Huntress with all the history they have with each other. I can't wait for the next issue to see what happens in Canary's fight and to see what's up with Gus and those pills.

A lot of news about these girls will be coming out in the future with the rumor being the Harley Quinn movie will be either a Gotham Sirens or Birds of Prey film.

Disclosure: All images are owned by DC Comics and not of the author.

Make sure you guys check out the 4 part Batman and Flash crossover "The Button" looks like the two of them will be figuring out who was behind the sudden change in the DC Universe.

  1. With the advent of mass production and global licensing deals, it is probably easier to buy than rent and the price differential is probably insignificant nowadays. comic review
