Angelina Jolie Honored With Maltin Modern Master Award at 2025 SBIFF

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) is thrilled to announce that the legendary Angelina Jolie will be honored with the Maltin Modern Master Award during its 40th annual celebration. This prestigious award will be presented to Jolie on February 5, 2025, recognizing her remarkable contributions to the film industry.

Jolie's illustrious career is characterized by her versatility and critical acclaim, making her a significant figure in global cinema. Her latest project, the biopic “Maria,” showcases her talent as she takes on the role of the iconic opera singer Maria Callas. Critics have lauded Jolie for her transformative performance, highlighting her ability to capture Callas’ intensity and grace, while also revealing the emotional depth and fragility behind the legendary singer's public persona.

Film critic Leonard Maltin, who the award is named after, expressed his admiration for Jolie, stating, “Angelina Jolie makes bold choices, both as an actress and as a director. She sets the bar high in both disciplines and always comes through. I look forward to reviewing her career with her in Santa Barbara!”

Angelina Jolie is not only an Academy Award-winning actress but also a talented director and producer. Her filmography includes notable titles such as Walt Disney Pictures’ Maleficent series, Salt, and Girl, Interrupted. Jolie has also directed and produced critically acclaimed works like First They Killed My Father and the upcoming Without Blood, along with the Oscar-nominated drama Unbroken. Additionally, she is a Tony Award-winning producer for the new Broadway musical The Outsiders.

Beyond her film career, Jolie is a dedicated humanitarian with over 20 years of experience focusing on refugee work and human rights. Established in 1995, the Maltin Modern Master Award honors individuals who have enriched culture through their achievements in the film industry. Renamed in 2015 to honor Leonard Maltin, past recipients include esteemed actors like Jamie Lee Curtis, Nicole Kidman, and Denzel Washington, as well as acclaimed filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan and James Cameron.
