The Santa Barbara International Film Festival is thrilled to announce that cinema legends Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce will be honored with the Cinema Vanguard Award at its 40th annual event. Their outstanding performances in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist will be highlighted, with Brody portraying Toth, an immigrant striving to rebuild his life in post-war America, while Pearce plays a wealthy art patron whose vision clashes with Toth’s journey. This tension symbolizes the broader conflict between innovation and tradition.
Both actors will receive the award on February 13, 2025. SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling praised their careers, stating, “Both Adrien and Guy have had lengthy, rewarding, and uncompromising careers—and in this year’s The Brutalist, they each give us their best work to date.”
Adrien Brody is an Academy Award winner for his role in The Pianist, making history as the youngest actor to win in that category. He has collaborated with renowned directors like Peter Jackson and Wes Anderson throughout his career. Guy Pearce, with nearly four decades in the industry, gained fame from The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and has starred in acclaimed films such as LA Confidential and Memento. He also won an Emmy for his role in HBO’s Mildred Pierce.
The Cinema Vanguard Award celebrates actors who take artistic risks and make significant contributions to film. Previous recipients include notable names like Benedict Cumberbatch and Laura Dern. The 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festival will take place from February 4 to February 15, 2025, featuring screenings, Q&As, and industry panels. Passes are available now at sbiff.org.
