Almost Famous: You’re Not a Legend Until You Can Critique While Broke – Introducing Mr. Lester Bangs

"Who's My Inspiration?"

Being a critic isn't for the weak. It isn't about hearing your favorite rap artist put out a rock song and, just because your definition of him is pop, doesn't mean he's the next Jimi Hendrix. No. Being a critic doesn't mean you say a few rhymes and think you're good enough to challenge a critic who's actually a rock critic and whose inspiration comes from one of the largest, most famous, and educational critics in history.

No. Being a critic means accepting that this industry freaking sucks—not just in education, but with the type of critics we have today and the type of artists who think they understand what a brilliant mind is while starving, being broke, and having no money but still creating brilliant pieces of art. It means being able to create the best criticism you've ever seen.

Because I'm here to tell you: You're not a legend until you can be like the greats—even when you're broke. Every band and every famous critic had no money and stayed up all night with a radio, and an experience waiting to be lit. They knew Hollywood wasn't their friend, but they also knew they’d get free records and go down in history. Mr. Lester Bangs wasn’t wrong about that.
