The third and final section of George Balanchine’s Jewels, Diamonds, is a spectacle that reflects the classical Russian style that Balanchine was originally trained in while studying at the Mariinsky Theatre as a boy. Suzanne Farrell and Jacques d’Amboise, who regularly performed together, originated the leading roles in the glistening section. Diamonds is set to Tschaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3 in D major, Op. 29, which he composed in 1875 right before creating the iconic score for Swan Lake.
